Gunaseelam Temple History

As per the Legends, Gunaseelar the disciple of Saint Sreethalpya served his Guru with such honesty that he was given with the superior knowledge of his guru. One day, Gunaseelar went on a pilgrimage to the Tirumala Hills and had darshan of Lord Venkateswara. He pleaded the Lord to come with him to his ashram as he could not be separated from Him anymore. The Lord moved by the devotion of Gunaseelar and told him that as he can't leave Tirumala as He is in a state of debt. Lord directed Gunaseelar to return to his Ashram and perform penance. The Lord told the saint that none other than Vaikuntavasa Sri Narayana would appear before him.
Gunaseelar did penance as directed by the Lord. After so many years, in the Krita Yuga Lord self-manifested in the ashram of Gunaseelar. Gunaseelar was excited and spent his days performing puja. During this time, his guru Sreethalpya wants to perform penance in  Badrinath. He asked his disciple to accompany and stay with Him. Gunaseelar was in a dilemma, wheater to go with his guru or to stay with Lord.
The ever kind Narayana was so moved at seeing the condition of his devotee and told him to serve his guru. Gunaseelar left the place after appointing a young boy to take care of the deity. Unfortunately, the boy grew fearful of the wild animals and the swirling waters of the Cauvery, He ran away. As the time passes by, an anthill grew over the deity.
Many years later, king Gnana Varman who was ruling this region, established his cowshed near to Gunaseelam. One day the cowherds noticed that the level of milk in the milk cans had gone down mysteriously. The puzzled cowherds reported this to the king and he came to see the mysterious disappearance of the milk. At that point, an old Brahmin appeared and told the king that if the anthill was dissolved with milk, the king could see the Lord himself. The anthill was dissolved with milk and the Idol of Venkatachalapathy with a Conch, discus, whip and sceptre was revealed.

Thayumana Swamy Temple Tiruchirapalli

Siva Lingam at Thayumana Swamy shrine is represented by an imposing natural projection of rock over 5 feet high.
As per the Legends, an ardent devotee Ratnavati became pregnant, her mother went to help her during delivery time. Ratnavati lived on the north bank of the river Cauvery, which flows thru Tiruchirapalli. As the baby delivery time approached, Ratnavati's mother had to go to Tiruchirapalli, crossing the river which was flooding.
A worried Ratnavati prayed to the Lord and found her mother by her side. The baby was born safely. Soon after the floods receded, her mother reached the place. When she asked how she managed to deliver the baby, then they came to know that it is Lord who came in the form of her Mother. Thayum ana means "One who became the Mother".

It is believed that the original temple entrance was facing East and now it is in opposite direction. As per the Legends, Sage Sarama an ardent devotee of Lord Siva used to grow a special flower in his garden for the Lord. One day he found a guard of King Parantaka Chola ( 907 A.D - 955 A.D) was taking away the flowers. The sage complained to the King about the theft. King ignored the complaint after knowing from the guard that queen ordered for these flowers. Sage cried a lot before the Lord as he was not able to perform Pooja.  Lord Siva became angry that He averted his benign glance from the capital city of Urayiur. This caused a rain of soil to fall on the city, worried king prayed for Vekkali Amman ( a form of Goddess Parvati), who pacified the Lord.

Mopidevi Temple is known for Sarpa Dosha Nivarana Pooja,  Anapathya Dosha Pooja and Naga Pratishta Poojas.

Rishis Sankara, Sanakasa, Sanatkumara, and Sanatsujata who are ardent devotees of Lord Siva and disengaged themselves from the worldly matters and remained naked. Once, they visited Mount Kailash (Abode of Lord Siva) to offer prayers to Lord Siva. During this time,  Sachi Devi (Wife of Indra Dev), Swaha Devi (Wife of Agni Dev), Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Lakshmi also arrived in Kailash. Lord Subramanya who was sitting in his mother's lap snickered innocently on seeing fully dressed Goddesses on one side and nude Rishis on the other side. Goddess Parvati reprimanded Subramanya for his childish act. Realizing the mistake, Lord Subramanya took the permission from his mother and reached the Earth to perform penance. Lord Subramanya did penance in the guise of a Serpent and got relieved from the sin. And the place where the Lord did penance later came to be known as ‘Mopidevi’.
