Amareswara Temple History Amaravati

The battle between Indra (God of Heaven) and Demon Tarakasura went for  Ten Thousand years. After losing the battle against the demon, Indra sought help from Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu advised Indra to pray for Lord Siva as Tarakasura got the boon from Lord Siva. Lord Siva was reluctant to kill Tarakasura who was a great devotee. Lord Siva deputed Kumara Swamy to lead the army of the Devas. Tarakasura used to wear Siva Linga around his neck because of which he is unbeatable. As advised by the Lord Vishnu, Kumara Swamy used Agni Astra to break the Siva Linga. The Atma Linga broke into five pieces which started reuniting. To prevent this reunification, Indra, Sun, Chandra, Lord Vishnu and Kumara Swamy established those Lingas with devotion. Lord Indra with his Guru Brihaspati established the first and biggest piece and named the Lord as Amareswara

Amaravati Temple stands on the banks of River Krishna. This temple is dedicated to Lord Siva and the presiding deity is called by Amareswara Swamy. The main deity here in this temple is in Linga form which is of 15 feet height.
